Storage systems for potatoes

Potato storage. Cooling systems

The principle of the cooling system for storing potatoes:

When using mechanical cooling, air is blown abowe the boxes using fans and directed to the back wall of the storage chamber. The air goes down and returns back to the air cooler, and then it is again fed cooled to the storage.

Product shrinkage is minimized due to the large evaporator surface and low temperature drop across the evaporator.

Mechanical cooling can be either as a separate system or intended for installation in storage facilities with storage in piles.

Conditions for efficient system operation:
  • there is enough space above boxes (1.50 – 1.80 m) for air flow;
  • smooth walls and ceiling for unimpeded air movement;
  • the distance between the rows of boxes is the same throughout the storage 15 – 20 cm;

it is necessary to ensure a stable voltage. The advantages of mechanical refrigeration for storing potatoes:
  • fast cooling to the set temperature;
  • long storage period;
  • independence from weather conditions;
  • optimal storage of early varieties and varieties that germinate quickly;
  • reduction of storage losses due to the possibility of smooth temperature reduction.
