Storage systems for potatoes
Potato storage. Airmixes
Principle of operation:
The air is sucked into the storage by a fan through the inlet hatch, passes abowe the boxes to the opposite wall, goes down along the longitudinal rows, passes in the opposite direction, where it is discharged out through the outlet hatches.
The use of this system is recommended for potato varieties that are well stored and that are delivered from the field without excess moisture.
Conditions for efficient system operation:
- enough space above the boxes (1.50 – 1.80 m) for airmixes;
- the distance between the rows of boxes is the same throughout the storage 15 – 20 cm;
- smooth walls and ceiling for even and smooth air movement;
- potatoes must be dry when loaded into storage.
Benefits:
- temperature control by mixing in external air;
- low maintenance costs;
- the possibility of increasing the storage area by adding the more airmixes;
- low electrical power requirements due to low air back pressure;
- low initial investment;
- can be used for short-term storage (1 – 2 months) in bags;
- the possibility to install additional mechanical cooling.
